ASIN-RISA Branding Change

We're growing up! At the Spring 2012 Board Meeting, the CAUL-CBUA Directors agreed to a reorganization that included retiring the ASIN-RISA brand. Services and groups working under ASIN-RISA will be migrated to a revamped CAUL-CBUA brand.

Why are we decommissioning the ASIN Brand?

There are a couple of reasons why we thought this was a good idea:

  • ASIN-RISA services have matured: The ASIN-RISA brand was developed to promote scholarly sharing within CAUL-CBUA. Several services were developed to further this vision – some have matured, like Document Delivery, while others have migrated from an ASIN service to individual libraries. It’s important to note that the core values ASIN-RISA was founded on will continue to live on in CAUL-CBUA.
  • Eases confusion among staff & users: In consultations, CAUL library staff expressed confusion about the difference between CAUL-CBUA & ASIN-RISA. By consolidating all of CAUL-CBUA services under a single brand, we hope to remove that confusion. And it’s one less acronym to explain to users!
  • Facelift! A brand change gives us a chance to revisit our visual image and bring in something new, dynamic and fresh.

What does this mean for CAUL-CBUA libraries?

  • ASIN-RISA Cards: The reciprocal borrowing program will remain unchanged, but the ASIN-RISA cards themselves will be phased out in favour of a newly designed CAUL-CBUA Card by the end of 2012. Each institution can decide how & when they would like to phase in the new cards.
  • ASIN-DDG: The Document Delivery Group will have a new name – the CAUL-DDG.
  • OCLC Resolver: Independently from the rebranding, the new OCLC resolver is moving off of the asin-risa.ca domain. Redirects will be provided by OCLC for a short time, but eventually the Resolver service will no longer use the asin-risa domain.

What steps do CAUL-CBUA libraries need to take?

  • Communication: It’s important that faculty, staff and students are notified of the change. The Communications Committee will be available to assist you with any messaging you wish to do.
  • Website: Ensure that all mentions of ASIN/RISA are changed to CAUL/CBUA on your website.
  • asin-risa.ca links: Ensure that all your e-resource providers are notified of your new OCLC resolver address, if applicable.

What does this mean for CAUL-CBUA's external partners?

All of CAUL-CBUA's services will remain the name, just the name will change. We will be contacting you through various channels to let you know of the change and asking you to make any changes to your websites that are necessary - your cooperation is appreciated!

Collaborative Research & Innovation Grant Winners

The Council of Atlantic University Libraries/Conseil des bibliothèques universitaires de l'Atlantique (CAUL-CBUA) is pleased to award its inaugural Collaborative Research & Innovation Grant.

The CAUL-CBUA Collaborative Research & Innovation Grant is intended to encourage collaborative research across the academic libraries in the region, proposing solutions to practical questions as well as projects which involve structured evidence-based research. Identification of projects of regional interest, which can prove useful in developing research partnerships between practitioners, educators and students is also encouraged.

We would like to congratulate our grant winners, Laura Syms of Cape Breton University and Kathleen Gadd, University of New Brunswick (Saint John).

Laura Syms, MLIS, and Margaret Dechman, PhD, of Cape Breton University were awarded a grant of $1000 for their study entitled, Factors Influencing Undergraduate Social Science Faculty Members’ Decision to Use Quantitative Data in the Classroom. The qualitative study will explore why faculty members choose to use quantitative data in research and instruction, with the aim of informing the development of a data literacy program that can be easily transferable to other institutions, including those in CAUL-CBUA.

Kathleen Gadd, MLIS, along with the research team of Robyn Butcher, MLIS, Martin MacKinnon, MD, and Denise Leblanc-Duchin, PhD, of the Horizon Health Network were awarded a grant of $1000 for their study evaluating point-of-care medical applications for mobile devices. A collaborative study involving librarians and medical residents, it aims to determine the most effective point-of-care mobile applications. The researchers hope that both the results and the methodology will be applicable to other CAUL-CBUA libraries supporting a medical program.

The CAUL-CBUA Collaborative Research & Innovation Grant was established in 2011 to encourage and support collaborate research undertaken by practitioners in CAUL-CBUA libraries. CAUL-CBUA awards two grants of up to $1000 annually. For more information on the grant, visit http://caul-cbua.ca/research_grant or contact Gillian Byrne, Manager of CAUL-CBUA at gbyrne@caul-cbua.

ASIN Software survey now posted on the CAUL-CBUA website

Last fall the ASIN Content Management Group circulated a survey to the members of CAUL-CBUA asking about software implemented in the various libraries.  The results are now posted in a PDF on the CAUL-CBUA website under the title ASIN, Software by Institution.

We see this as a tool for collaboration, for identifying who to contact if you want to know how another institution is using software, seeing what else is in use by other universities, etc.

Ideally, this works best if the information is up-to-date. Eventually it would be nice to have it in a format that can be updated by all members but for now if you have corrections, additions or suggestions please email: rcampbel@stfx.ca

Truncation in SingleSearch

Please note that the "*" is the standard truncation character in SingleSearch. If an asterisk is found at the end of a search term the SingleSearch connector will map the "*" to the appropriate truncation character in the native interface, whatever it might be. Most native interfaces already use the "*" as their truncation character. We did discover that SingleSearch was not supporting truncation in Web of Science and WIlsonWeb databases. I have submited this problem to SirsiDynix for repair but in the meantime have created my own fix for adding truncation support for keyword anywhere searches until the actual fix is recieved which will deal with author, title and subject truncation. This fix will be applied to all of your instances as soon as Glenn returns from vacation. Also, SingleSearch will not map the "*" character if the native interface does not support truncation (e.g. Google). Thanks to Slavko Manojlovich at MUN for this posting which originally appeared on the ASIN tech list.
