CAUL/CBUA Strategic Plan

The Council of Atlantic University Libraries/Conseil bibliothèques des universités de l'Atlantique (CAUL/CBUA) is composed of the chief librarian of each institution constituting the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU). Its purpose is to enhance university education, research, and scholarly communication in the region. In light of its purpose, CAUL/CBUA works toward:

  1. Enhancing access to our collections and services.

To this end, CAUL/CBUA will work actively to remove barriers to resource sharing between member institutions. Students, faculty and staff of CAUL-CBUA institutions have access to the collections of other member institutions on the same basis as the students, faculty and staff of those institutions, licensing restrictions allowing. To this end, CAUL/CBUA will create the Atlantic Scholarly Information Network to act as a gateway to local and regional resources, and meeting the needs of the parent institutions as the information technology environment evolves.

  2. Leveraging our purchasing power to the benefit of the region.

To this end, CAUL/CBUA will engage in consortial purchasing of electronic resources and other where there is advantage to do. To this end, CAUL/CBUA will create those mechanisms that will support a regional approach to opportunities that are not feasible on the basis of individual institutional initiatives.

  3. Strengthening library services through staff development.

To this end, CAUL/CBUA will facilitate meetings of staff at all levels to enhance the regional approach to what it sees as regional initiatives.

  4. Improving communications among member libraries and other related organizations/groups.

To this end, CAUL/CBUA will establish appropriate lists, blogs, conference calls, and meetings for its members and establish active liaison with appropriate regional and national bodies.
